Volunteer Appreciation Month

Every April, we set aside time to recognize the invaluable contributions of volunteers in our school district. Volunteer Appreciation Month is a poignant reminder of the selflessness and dedication exhibited by individuals who donate their time, talents, and energy to make a difference.

President Richard Nixon established National Volunteer Appreciation Week in 1974, but National Volunteer Month dates back even earlier, to the mid-20th century. Numerous organizations and nonprofits still use the month of April to acknowledge and celebrate the immense contributions of volunteers who have stepped up to support their missions.

Bringing volunteering a little closer to home, the School District of Osceola County (SDOC) honors school volunteers with an annual Volunteer Appreciation Day held every April. For the 2023/2024 school year, the district has over 16,100 school volunteers who have contributed more than 145,500 volunteer hours. According to independentsector.org, the estimated volunteer hour is $31.80. Our school volunteers have contributed $4,626,900 of their valuable time to our school district!

Few activities produce such valuable benefits for so many as volunteering. Involvement as an OASIS School Volunteer for Osceola's schools reaps great rewards for students from kindergarten up to high school:

Positive attitude toward school
Improved attendance and academic performance
Higher quality education
Preparation for tomorrow's workforce and decision-makers

OASIS stands for Osceola Adults Serving and Inspiring Students. As part of the school district's community relations efforts, the OASIS Department oversees the OASIS School Volunteer program. Welcoming volunteers from every background and every stage of life helps foster a strong sense of community between our schools and the Osceola County community.

The goals of the OASIS School Volunteer Program are to:

Enrich the curriculum by assisting students
Improve students' self-worth by increasing the opportunity for educational achievement
Assist and support teachers and staff with non-instructional tasks and duties
Stimulate community interest, concern, and support for education
Enhance all aspects of the educational process

Our community is very fortunate to have thousands of citizens dedicated to supporting our students and our schools. Each day, our OASIS Volunteers display selfless acts of service to assure that all SDOC students receive a quality education in a safe and secure learning environment. We are incredibly proud of this commitment to quality education and appreciate volunteers helping provide our students with the best education possible.

A volunteer's personal interest and desire to help is welcomed and appreciated. Schools need volunteers all year long! Our youth are our most important community resource, and their education will form the foundation for the future.

Cada abril, reservamos un tiempo para reconocer las invaluables contribuciones de los voluntarios en nuestro distrito escolar. El Mes de Agradecimiento a los Voluntarios es un recordatorio conmovedor de la abnegación y dedicación exhibida por individuos que donan su tiempo, talentos y energía para hacer una diferencia.

El presidente Richard Nixon estableció la Semana Nacional de Agradecimiento a los Voluntarios en 1974, pero el Mes Nacional del Voluntariado se remonta incluso antes, a mediados del siglo XX. Numerosas organizaciones y entidades sin fines de lucro siguen aprovechando el mes de abril para reconocer y celebrar la inmensa contribución de los voluntarios que se han ofrecido a apoyar sus misiones.

Acercando el voluntariado un poco más a casa, el Distrito Escolar del Condado Osceola (SDOC) honra a los voluntarios escolares con un Día de Agradecimiento a los Voluntarios que se celebra anualmente en abril. Para el año escolar 2023/2024, el distrito cuenta con más de 16,100 voluntarios escolares que han contribuido con más de 145,500 horas de voluntariado. Según independentsector.org, la hora de voluntariado estimada es de $31.80. ¡Nuestros voluntarios escolares han contribuido $4,626,900 de su valioso tiempo a nuestro distrito escolar!

Pocas actividades producen beneficios tan valiosos para tantas personas como el voluntariado. La participación como Voluntario Escolar de OASIS para las escuelas de Osceola cosecha grandes recompensas para los estudiantes desde el kindergarten hasta la escuela superior:

OASIS, por sus siglas en inglés, significa Adultos de Osceola que Sirven e Inspiran a los Estudiantes. Como parte de los esfuerzos de relaciones comunitarias del distrito escolar, el Departamento OASIS supervisa el programa de Voluntarios Escolares OASIS. Acoger a voluntarios de todos los orígenes y de todas las etapas de la vida ayuda a fomentar un fuerte sentido de comunidad entre nuestras escuelas y la comunidad del condado Osceola.

Los objetivos del Programa de Voluntarios Escolares OASIS son:

Enriquecer el currículo ayudando a los estudiantes
Mejorar la autoestima de los estudiantes al aumentar las oportunidades para el logro educativo
Ayudar y apoyar a los maestros y al personal con tareas y deberes no relacionados con la enseñanza
Estimular el interés, la preocupación y el apoyo de la comunidad por la educación
Mejorar todos los aspectos del proceso educativo

Nuestra comunidad es muy afortunada de contar con miles de ciudadanos dedicados a apoyar a nuestros estudiantes y nuestras escuelas. Cada día, nuestros Voluntarios OASIS despliegan actos desinteresados de servicio para asegurar que todos los estudiantes del Distrito Escolar del Condado Osceola (SDOC, por sus siglas en inglés) reciban una educación de calidad en un ambiente de aprendizaje seguro y protegido. Estamos increíblemente orgullosos de este compromiso con la educación de calidad y apreciamos que los voluntarios ayuden a proporcionar a nuestros estudiantes la mejor educación posible.

El interés personal y el deseo de ayudar de un voluntario son bienvenidos y apreciados. ¡Las escuelas necesitan voluntarios durante todo el año! Nuestros jóvenes son el recurso más importante de nuestra comunidad y su educación será la base de su futuro.
