This is the image for the news article titled Voters To Decide Half-Cent Sales Tax Referendum on November 8Facing a growing capital funding deficit that is now over $500 million for the next five years, the Osceola County School Board has approved a special resolution to add a referendum to the November 8th ballot for a half-cent sales surtax. The sole purpose of which is to reduce the capital funding shortfall to better meet the needs of our community. The proposed sales tax of a half a penny would begin in January 2017, and it would generate approximately $25 million annually for 20 years.

Like many Central Florida school districts, the Osceola School District would use the revenue collected from the half-cent sales tax for specific capital needs:

• All monies collected would stay in Osceola County.
• It would be used for renovation of aging schools to reduce the need for portables due to overcrowding and to ensure that schools continue to be well-maintained to serve students and teachers.
• It would also provide for security enhancements to provide for the safety of students.
• In addition, essential upgrades and enhancements of technology infrastructure and equipment would receive funding to help prepare students for jobs in the 21st century.

"Top-rated schools will help attract businesses and jobs, improving the county's economy and increasing property values in Osceola County," said Clarence Thacker, Chairman of the Osceola County School Board. "By continuing to ensure quality schools through this investment, Osceola County is poised to be the residential and high-tech destination of Central Florida as people want to live here, work here, and educate their children here."
