Update: March 30, 2020 as of 6:15 p.m. The State advised all school districts to extend the school closures through May 1, 2020, due to the COVID-19 pandemic. While we certainly miss our students, their safety, and the health of our community, remains of critical importance. All events through May 1 have been canceled at this time, but there are no changes to graduation as of yet. Our digital learning plans are now being enacted, and we will continue to support our students, families, and teachers on this new learning journey.



 

 

Update: March 30, 2020 Please be aware that Microsoft is experiencing world-wide performance issues with the Teams platform, and we have been assured that Microsoft is working as quickly as possible to resolve these performance challenges. For those signing into the Teams platform for the first time, there could be an additional wait time of up to 24 hours to be provisioned. We will send out additional notifications as these issues are resolved. We appreciate your patience during this time, and please be flexible and patient with your students as we work through these challenges in the coming days.  Teachers will be flexible with assignment deadlines this first week as we all adjust to this new way of learning together.



 

Update: March 27, 2020 To ensure that students have nutritious meals while away from school, the district's School Nutrition Services Department will provide FREE breakfast and lunch to children 18 years and under during the extended school closure between March 23 through April 15, 2020, at the following sites:

    Meals will be available for pickup between 9:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. at each location. Families can go to school/site nearest them to pick up food even if they do not attend that school. Families will drive up in the bus loops, and they will be handed meals through the vehicle window. Meals can be provided to children not of school age if they are in the group picking up the food.

    Effective March 27, 2020, the Florida Department of Agriculture & Consumer Services will NOT require students to be present to receive the meals, but parents/guardians should be prepared to provide one of the following documents to receive a meal for each of their child(ren) who are not present: school identification card, child’s passport, government-issued child identification card, or any document proving parent/guardian identity and relationship to the child, such as an adoption decree; doctor, clinic, or hospital record; religious record; or daycare center record.Meals will not be provided without documentation for the child(ren), and meals can still be received when the child is present with an adult.

    On Monday, March 30, Lynx will begin offering complimentary transportation to parents and students who ride on their current routes to get to the nearest stop to the feeding sites. Parents must be accompanied by their child to receive the free fare. Parents should inform the driver that they are going to the school for breakfast and/or lunch, and they will not be charged bus fare.



     

    Update: March 20, 2020 Thank you for your continued support and patience during this rapidly changing time; with COVID-19, the situation has been changing day by day, hour by hour.  We are committed to providing parents and students with the latest information as it unfolds during the school closure period:

    1. The Osceola School District is preparing to transition to student digital learning starting the week of March 30. We want to make this change as easy as possible. All resources for students and families will be available through the ClassLink platform, which the students are familiar with using, on the district website at www.osceolaschools.net and can be accessed using any digital device (smartphone, laptop, desktop computer, or tablet).

    • Accessing The Learning Platform: Parents are asked to know their student’s ID number and password so they can log-in to ClassLink. If you or your student do not know their ID number, please contact our Digital Learning Hotline at 407-870-4037, which will be open starting on Tuesday, March 24. Detailed instructions regarding accessing the district’s digital learning platform will be posted on the district’s website by Tuesday, March 24.

    • Digital Device Needs: Should your student need access to a digital device to engage with school work, the Osceola School District has a limited number of laptops and WiFi hotspots that will be made available to loan to students. To reserve a device for your student, please contact your school on Tuesday, March 24, or Wednesday, March 25, between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. 

      District device distribution for high school students will be given first priority, and will take place at the school your child attends on Thursday, March 26, between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. Remaining devices will be available for elementary and middle school students at the school your child attends on Friday, March 27, between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.

    • For Students Without Access To A Digital Device: Paper packets will be available for students in elementary and middle school, and will be available for pick up in your school’s front office starting Monday, March 30. Completed packets should be returned when school re-opens.

    • Special Needs Students:  If you have a special needs student for whom distance learning is not feasible, please contact the Exceptional Student Education Department at 407-343-8700. 
       
    • WiFi Access: Thanks to Spectrum, free WiFi will be provided for 60-days to students and families in their service area. To enroll, parents should call 1-844-488-8395. All installation fees will be waived for new student households. WiFi hotspots across Spectrum’s footprint will also be available for public use.

    • Student Grades:  Students will continue to earn grades based on their progress in their classes. Student grades for assignments completed through digital learning and/or packets will be entered into Focus and averaged to assign the fourth quarter grade. Grades and credits will continue to count toward promotion and/or graduation.

    • Student Instructional Hours: We expect students to spend between two and a half to three hours on their assignments each day, Monday through Friday, during the extended school closure. Frequent breaks, healthy activity, and healthy snacks are recommended to break up screen time. Students should complete an assignment daily for each content area or class period. 

    2. Effective immediately, all school and district offices will be closed to the public.  Parents in need of services not mentioned above are encouraged to communicate with school district staff using the telephone during regular office hours, via email, or through the Let’s Talk platform on the district and school websites.

    3. Effective immediately, all special events, athletic events, and special activities scheduled through April 30 will either be postponed and rescheduled or canceled.  This includes the use of our schools and facilities by outside entities.  Schools will begin reimbursement of any funds already paid for events and activities, and will begin processing refunds to students and families.  The district will continue to closely monitor the COVID-19 situation as it relates to graduation ceremonies.

    4. The district is working to pilot a new online registration process starting Monday, March 30.  Parents looking to enroll a new student while schools are closed are encouraged to contact our Student Services Department at 407-870-4897.



      

    Update: March 18, 2020 This update is for Osceola School District Employees: Our partners at RosenCare, Healics and the SDOC Center for Employee Health understand that many of you and your family members are worried about COVID-19. We assure you that our team at the health center is working diligently to ensure they are prepared to help prevent the spread of further disease. As always, health center staff are diligently cleaning patient areas of the center and increasing the frequency of those cleanings as well. When entering the health center, you may notice some changes; perhaps staff are wearing masks or you as a patient may be asked to wear a mask, wash or sanitize your hands. Rest assured, these measures are in place simply to ensure we are doing all we can to mitigate the spread of illness.

    Another change you may notice is an enhanced triage protocol when scheduling appointments. In order for this protocol to be effective, we ask for your cooperation by calling in advance for all appointments, eliminating any unscheduled/walk-in visits to the health center.  Upon scheduling, you will be screened based on your symptoms, travel history and potential exposure to the Coronavirus. If you are identified as at risk for exposure to the virus, you may be referred to a different healthcare facility for testing.

     

    While the SDOC Center for Employee Health does have the ability to test for COVID-19, due to a national shortage, testing supplies are extremely limited, allowing the health center to only procure minimal tests at a time. In an effort to conserve available resources, testing at the health center will be limited until supplies can be made more readily available.

     

    We also ask for your cooperation in continuing to take common sense measures that support infection control:  wash your hands often, cover your coughs and stay home when you are ill.

     



      

    Update: March 17, 2020 An important COVID-19 update for parents, students, and staff as of March 17:

    As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to develop and spread throughout the country, your Osceola County School Board members and I understand that you have questions, concerns, and fears about the impact on our school district and you as critical stakeholders in our system. Please rest assured that the School Board and I continue to monitor the situation carefully, and we are working collaboratively with local government officials and local school districts, and most importantly, we are committed to doing everything in our power to mitigate the impact on the families we serve and the dedicated employees who work diligently to meet the needs of our students every chance, every child, every day.

    As of this evening, the Florida Department of Education has said the earliest K-12 students will return back to school would be April 15, 2020. School closures are now in effect for all K-12 schools, the district's VPK and Extended Learning Programs, Osceola Technical College, and the Adult Learning Center Osceola. That date will be reevaluated every two weeks to determine its feasibility as the pandemic progresses. At this point, we await clarification from the state regarding student make-up day requirements, any waived days from our regular calendars, and any employee-related decisions required pursuant to this direction. All statewide assessments have been cancelled this school year. Information regarding graduation requirements, graduation ceremonies, and other end-of-year activities will be forthcoming as the situation progresses. For now, all mass gatherings of 10 or more individuals are canceled on our campuses until April 15, 2020.

    To ensure our children will not go hungry while school is not in session, our School Nutrition Services Department will provide pack-and-go free meals for students at 12 designated sites, which can be found on the school district's website, from March 23 - April 15, between the hours of 9:30 - 11:00 a.m. Students will need to be with their parents or guardians who come to pick up the meal items, and we will utilize a drive-in procedure through our bus loops to minimize person-to-person contact.

    As originally scheduled, our district offices will reopen tomorrow, March 18, for business; however, we ask you to utilize phone or electronic communication when possible to ask questions or address concerns. If it becomes necessary, we may restrict access to the buildings in order to keep groups of more than 10 from accumulating in our customer service areas. District staff members will be working throughout the rest of the week to finalize an instructional continuity plan so learning can continue now that school closures have been extended. The district's continuity instruction plan will be shared with students and parents next week and fully implemented 3/30 - 4/15. Parents are asked to look for a brief survey via Remind tomorrow regarding student access to technology.

    To our employees, please know that we will get through this together. Our Osceola County School Board Members and I are committed to the fact that regular employee compensation will be paid through this extended closure period.

    For the remainder of this week (Spring Break): Employees regularly scheduled to return to work tomorrow and who choose to not use their leave time and to work tomorrow, Thursday, and/or Friday should report to work. The exception is no one comes to work if they are exhibiting symptoms of the COVID-19 virus, including fever and/or dry cough; those individuals must contact their supervisor to request sick leave and contact their medical provider. All individuals who are returning from a cruise or travel out of the country must quarantine themselves for 14 days. Again, please contact your supervisor, request sick leave, and contact your medical provider. If you are reporting to work this week, please practice social distancing and healthy habits.

    Next week: All district and school administrators should report to their normal work location/school on Monday, March 23, 2020, to begin preparing for their students' instructional continuity plans, unless they are exhibiting symptoms, are quarantined, or have been exposed to someone with the COVID-19 virus. All employees are asked to practice social distancing and healthy habits.

    Directions for when and where all other employees (instructional staff, bus drivers, clerical staff, paraprofessionals, and other non-administrative personnel) should report on March 23 will be provided via email and call-out message no later than on Friday, March 20.

    Thank you for your patience during this challenging time. I realize that the situation is changing hour by hour and day to day. At this point in time, there seems to be more questions than answers. We will continue to monitor the situation carefully and make decisions in the best interest of our students and staff.     Update: March 13, 2020 7:05 p.m. SAT testing is canceled at all Osceola School District sites.


     

    Update: March 13, 2020 5:55 p.m. Based on further developments in the state-wide effort to control the spread of COVID-19, we are enacting the following changes to our school district operations:

    1. Spring Break for students and 9 month employees will be extended by one week.  We expect school to resume on Monday, March 30.
    2. All extracurricular events and activities, including athletic competitions, scheduled through March 31 will be canceled. If possible, we will work to postpone and reschedule, but no extracurricular activities will resume until we receive additional guidance from state leaders and state and local health officials. 
    3. Important end-of-year activities such as proms, grad-bash, awards night, concerts, and graduation ceremonies scheduled after March 31 will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis as soon as we receive additional guidance.
    4. State testing, slated to begin on April 1, will be delayed by two weeks.
    5. SDOC has developed an instructional continuity plan that will be implemented in the event this situation extends beyond two weeks. Please continue to watch for our messaging and monitor our website and social media for updates and links to critical learning content.
    6. All 12 month employees are expected to return to work on Wednesday, March 18, if not taking vacation or personal time during the original week of spring break. Decisions about return to work status for teachers and other 10 and 11 month support staff will be made next week, as additional information and guidance becomes available about the need to implement an instructional continuity plan. Please monitor district communication carefully.
    7. School and district offices will reopen on Monday, March 23, as originally planned, and administrators and other 12-month employees should plan to report to work until further notice. Please contact your direct supervisor if you have questions or specific concerns.

    For all of us, today, there are still more questions than answers. Will make-up days be required? Will we be required to cancel important end-of-year celebrations? When will life return to normal?


    Please remember that this situation is evolving day by day, hour by hour, and minute by minute. The most important priority for your School Board Members and Superintendent is for all of us to stay well, and we will continue to keep your well-being front of mind as we make critical decisions. Thank you for your patience and dedication throughout this situation. Continue to practice the healthy habits we've shared, and watch for updates as this progresses. 

     

     


     

    Update: March 13, 2020 Superintendent Dr. Debra Pace continues to work closely with leaders from Osceola County, the City of Kissimmee, the City of St. Cloud, the local Department of Health, and the Emergency Operations Center to ensure the latest COVID-19 information is being used to make decisions to mitigate the impact of the pandemic and to maximize safety across the community. All Osceola County public schools will be on Spring Break from March 13 – March 20, 2020. While students and staff are away from schools, the district will use this time to further clean and disinfect hard surfaces. At this time, no decisions have been made to close schools after Spring Break as the threat of Coronavirus remains low in our community, particularly for young people, and there are no confirmed cases in Osceola County. The Osceola School District will follow the latest recommendations from the Florida Department of Education and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:

    Students or district employees who go on foreign travel, to any country, must self-isolate for 14 days upon return until further notice. Student absences will be excused, and students will be allowed to make up assignments and tests. Arrangements can be made through the school once parents notify administration that their child will need to self-isolate. Employees will need to use their leave time to cover their time away during the self-isolation period.

    Students or district employees who go on a cruise, anywhere, must self-isolate for 14 days upon return until further notice. Student absences will be excused, and students will be allowed to make up assignments and tests. Arrangements can be made through the school once parents notify administration that their child will need to self-isolate. Employees will need to use their leave time to cover their time away during the self-isolation period.

    From now through March 31st, school or district special events or activities involving more than 250 people will be postponed or canceled.

    The best prevention is continued practice of healthy habits, including frequent washing of hands with soap and water, covering coughs and sneezes, and limiting travel. Parents, students, and staff are encouraged to regularly check the district’s website and social media for updates. Important information will also be shared through Remind text messages and the district’s telephone call-out system.



    Update: March 11, 2020
     
    Tomorrow, Thursday, March 12, signifies the end of the 3rd nine weeks' grading period, and we look forward to seeing our students and staff members in our schools and offices for "business as usual." Guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Governor of Florida, and the Florida Department of Education as it relates to K-12 public schools remains the same: the threat of Coronavirus remains low in our community, particularly for young people. The best prevention is continued practice of healthy habits, including frequent washing of hands with soap and water; covering coughs and sneezes; avoiding travel or contact with individuals who have traveled to the high risk areas of China, Japan, Italy, South Korea, and Iran; and staying home and contacting a medical provider if you are exhibiting flu-like symptoms including cough and fever above 100.4. Individuals who do travel to these areas must self-quarantine for 14 days upon return, and contact with elderly individuals will be restricted to protect their more sensitive health conditions. 

    Spring Break begins on Friday, March 13, for students, and runs through Friday, March 20. District staff will continue to carefully monitor the situation, and we are prepared to implement an instructional continuity plan in the event that the situation worsens and temporary school closures become necessary. We will continue to update you via our social media messages, Remind text messages, through call-outs, and the District website. I encourage you to have a safe Spring Break!




     

    Updated: March 10, 2020 All Central Florida school superintendents continue to carefully monitor the COVID-19 situation. Following a call with the Florida Commissioner of Education this morning and based on his strong recommendations, all student fieldtrips involving air travel will be suspended immediately through the end of the current school year. District and school staff members will work with parents and travel companies on appropriate cancellation arrangements.

    While we have been advised by experts that the risk to young people remains low, we encourage everyone to continue to follow the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) guidelines and to follow healthy habits. Hand washing with soap and water remains the best prevention.

     


     

    Updated: March 9, 2020 We are aware of upcoming events taking place across the District in the coming months, such as end-of-the-year field-trips, programs, proms, graduations, etc. At this time we are following all guidance from the Florida Department of Health and the CDC to take proper precautions regarding COVID-19. Parents and guardians always have the final choice of whether their student participates in any event or activity. Should any cancellations be necessary, we will communicate with parents using our website, social media, Remind, and our call-out system.


     

    Updated: March 5, 2020 If you are planning to travel outside the US, the surgeon general is recommending a 14-day isolation period upon return to the US, specifically to the areas identified by the CDC (South Korea, China, Japan, Iran and Italy). A doctor's note will be required prior to returning to school from any of these countries.


     

    Ensuring the health and safety of our students and staff is a top priority for the Osceola County School Board. The district continues to be in regular communication with Osceola County Emergency Management and the Florida Department of Health about the coronavirus, and is following their guidance. At this time, there have been no cases of coronavirus identified in Florida.

    Parents and students are asked to take some common-sense precautions that apply to many infectious diseases, like the flu. The most important are having students stay home from school if they are sick, covering your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze, and washing your hands frequently with soap and water.     Be assured that the district will follow recommendations from county and state health officials in the event school closures are necessary. We will remain diligent in following the latest information available on this important health issue, and will communicate with parents as we receive new information.
